DADDY SAW THE ELEPHANT

Fred Upham’s father was a Civil War soldier who actually shook hands with President Lincoln—and Fred is still alive (12 Nov 2014) and collects a monthly pension based on his dad’s service:

Note: Civil War soldiers called their first experience of combat “seeing the elephant” (since seeing an elephant anyplace other than a child's school primer was such an unusual experience in those days before movies, tv, and even the routine printing of photographs in books, magazines, and newspapers).
