The conflict over slavery in Kansas Territory and the Civil War needs to be remembered for many reasons, and one of the most important is as a lesson concerning the negative effects of abandoning the framework of American life that is embodied in the United States Constitution.

The framers of the United States Constitution created more than a system of government, they created a philosophical framework for American society that provides a means for Americans to live and work together in peace despite having dramatically opposing beliefs and life philosophies. Bleeding Kansas and the Civil War point out the severely dangerous results when Americans set aside the principles of the United States Constitution in government and social actions.
