This blog chronicles the experiences of residents of a single county (Jefferson County, West Virginia) during the Civil War. Jefferson County was of course part of Virginia when the war began, and was apparently not pleased about being “annexed” by the fledging state of West Virginia:

I am a former resident of Charles Town, Jefferson County, WV and I am looking for any information on a skirmish at Beeler's (spelled Beller's in CW time) Mill near Harpers Ferry between the 13th Massachusetts and the Charles Town Home Guard Cavalry. Would also like to know if anyone has the list of names of these Home Guards. The skirmish occurred on September 2, 1861, and ended with three home guard killed, five wounded and twenty captured and marched to Harpers Ferry. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
