HOMESTEAD RECORDS

Looks like homestead land records are going to be digitized and indexed, thanks to the efforts of the National Park Service, NARA, FGS, and the Genealogical Society of Utah. How significant will this project be? Let’s have a look at some numbers:

Homesteads in Missouri: 34,633
Total homestead acreage: 3,644,306

That’s 8% of the total acreage of our state- in some other states west of the Mississippi River, the percentage of homestead land varies from 25% (Kansas) to 45% (Nebraska).

An article on this project is in FGS Forum 20:3 (Fall 2008): 5-6. You can get copies of articles mentioned in this blog by contacting Midwest Genealogy Center, the repository for publications received by MoSGA.
